Questions
What does an age-graded percentage mean?#
It is your time expressed as a share of the world best for your distance, adjusted to your age and sex. 100% is that world best. A 70.0% marathon at 55 and a 70.0% 5K at 30 are the same quality of performance, which is the whole point of the number.
Why does this calculator ask for age instead of date of birth?#
Because a one-off check does not need to know your birthday. Enter your age on race day and nothing is stored. The record book inside RaceRecords uses your date of birth so every race is graded at your exact age automatically.
Which tables does this calculator use?#
Road results are graded with the Alan Jones 2025 tables, approved by the USATF Masters Long Distance Running Council in January 2025. Track uses WMA 2023. Both are single-year age tables, so the result reflects your exact age on race day rather than a five-year bracket.
What counts as a good age-graded percentage?#
The usual shorthand is 60% local class, 70% regional class, 80% national class and 90% world class. In a big-city marathon field roughly one finisher in eighty reaches 80%. Anything above 70% puts you in the sharp end of most races.
Why do other age-grade calculators give a different number?#
Most online calculators still run on the 2010 or 2015 factor tables, and some round age to a five-year band. RaceRecords uses Alan Jones 2025 for road and WMA 2023 for track at single-year ages, so it can differ by a point or two from a calculator that has not been updated.
