A man I know has a marathon PR of 3:05:00, run at 38. He's 48 now. Last autumn he ran 3:12 and apologised for it in the finish area, the way people do. The 3:05 is still the number he mentions when running comes up.
By age grade, the 3:12 is the better race. His PR scores 65.6%. The 3:12 at 48 scores 68.8%. The performance he's been quietly proud of for a decade is the weaker one, and the race he apologised for is the best marathon he has ever run.
So this piece isn't about how age grading works. It's about the objection — that it's a soft number, a consolation prize, a participation trophy for people who got slow. That objection deserves a serious hearing before it gets taken apart.
The objection, in its strongest form
Here is the case against, put as well as I can put it. A race is a race. You cross the line where you cross it, and no coefficient moves you up the results page. The clock is the only number in the sport that nobody can argue with, and it doesn't care how you feel about it.
Then there's the deeper suspicion, and this is the part worth taking seriously: any metric that goes up while you get slower should be treated as suspect. That's a sound instinct. Most numbers that rise as your performance falls are selling you something. A runner on LetsRun put the whole thing in one line — "you're fast or you're not. Unfortunately you get old and slow down, and that's that."
I don't think that's stupid. I think it's the correct default posture toward any adjusted statistic, and the burden sits with age grading to earn its way past it. Fine. Let's check the arithmetic.
What do the tables actually give you?
Start with the part nobody expects. Between 22 and 35, the age factor for men is exactly 1.0000. Not "close to". Not "a small allowance". Zero adjustment, for the fourteen years most runners consider their prime.
Then the thirties. Across the full decade from 30 to 40, the Alan Jones 2025 marathon table hands a man 2.2% of extra time — about four minutes on a three-hour marathon. That is what a decade of aging is worth, according to the tables.
Now the other side of the ledger. In 2020, Ganse and colleagues tracked 83,209 results from 34,132 masters track and field athletes aged 35 to 97, published in GeroScience. Among athletes with ten or more results across their career, performance fell 0.83% a year for men and 0.91% for women.
Line them up over a matched decade and it isn't close. From 35 to 45, the table grants a man 6.7% of extra time. Measured decline across those same ten years takes 8.6%. The allowance covers about three quarters of the loss, and the runner eats the rest as a falling percentage.
The two lines don't meet until 61. For twenty-six consecutive years — the exact span in which most people do their serious racing — the age-grading tables hand back less time than aging removes. The shaded band isn't a rounding error. It's most of a running career.
Who sets the standard you're measured against?
This is where the "graded on a curve to be kind" reading breaks down completely. The age factors are not drawn from how the average 60-year-old slows. They're built from single-age world bests, compiled by the Association of Road Racing Statisticians. That means the fastest performance ever recorded by a human being at that exact age, fitted into a curve.
So the standard a 60-year-old is measured against sits roughly where Tommy Hughes ran 2:27:52 at 59. His score is 99.15%. He came within a point of the ceiling and still didn't touch it. Ed Whitlock's 3:15:53 at 80 grades 98.98%. Those are the best masters marathons ever run, and they're the shape of the curve rather than exceptions to it. It's drawn along the outer edge of what has ever been done, not through the middle of the field.
There's a tell in the tables' own history. The 2010 revision exists because the custodians decided the standard was too soft: "the female tables for older runners at the longer distances were too soft. Several runners were obtaining percentage performances of over 100%." So they made it harder. Participation trophies don't get tightened when too many people win them.
If age grading were soft, what would the data look like?
It'd look like generous scores. So I graded every Berlin Marathon finisher from 2021 to 2023 — 100,807 of them — on the Alan Jones 2025 table, and checked.
The median finisher of a World Marathon Major scores 53.8%. Nearly three quarters of the field, 72,439 people, come in under 60%. Just over a third score below 50%. These are people who trained for months and finished a Major. The metric tells most of them, flatly, that they are a long way off.
But the sharper test is whether the bar sags with age. If age grading were a handout to masters runners, the older bands would clear the elite marks at a much higher rate. 80% is the usual shorthand for national class, so here's the share of each band clearing it.

The 80% column barely moves. It's 1.8% for runners in their twenties and 1.6% for runners in their early sixties. The lowest rate in the whole field belongs to the 40-44 band, at 0.9%. Whatever the tables are doing, they are not lowering the elite bar as people age — it sits at roughly the same height at every age on the chart.
The median does drift up, from 51.8% to 56.5%, and that's real. But under five points across four decades is selection, not generosity. The casual runners thin out, and the ones still racing at 62 are disproportionately the ones who never stopped.
What excuse does age grading take away?
Here's the part that actually stings, and it's the reason I think serious runners resist this metric rather than dismiss it.
The clock lets you say: I'm slower because I'm older. It's true, it's unfalsifiable in the moment, and it's a complete explanation. Age grading has already priced that in. The allowance is baked into the factor before you see your score. So if your percentage went down, aging is not available as the reason — it was already subtracted.
Watch it work. A man runs 3:00:00 at 40, which grades 68.5%. Five years later he runs 3:10:00 — ten minutes slower, entirely normal, the sort of decline nobody would question. His age grade is 67.7%. Down 0.8. The tables had already written him a slower target for the same score, 3:07:52, and he came in behind it.
That's the whole argument. The stopwatch tells an aging runner one thing every year, and it's the same thing, and it's always a little sad. Age grading asks a question the clock can't: did you actually get worse, or did you just get older? Those have different answers, and only one of them is your fault.
Where the objection is right
Some of it holds, and pretending otherwise would be the defensive move.
Age grading doesn't change finishing position, and it shouldn't. Nobody gets handed a place they didn't run. It's a rating, not a result. Age-group awards can keep their five-year brackets for the podium, blunt as those brackets are.
It's also a model, with a model's uncertainty. Editions disagree — my New York marathon moves 1.5 points depending on which table you ask. Distances without their own factor get interpolated, which widens the error. And a curve fitted to world bests is thinnest exactly where the data is thinnest, out past 75.
And the LetsRun poster is right that a race is a race. On the day, in the finish chute, the clock is the number that counts. Age grading is what the clock can't tell you afterwards — whether the season was any good.
So is it a participation trophy?
A participation trophy is a number everyone gets to feel good about. Age grading hands nearly three quarters of a Berlin Marathon field a score under 60%, gives a 34-year-old no adjustment whatsoever, and runs a deficit against measured decline until 61.
It's not a softer standard than the clock. It's the same standard with the one excuse removed. That's why it feels worse — most runners score lower on it than the stopwatch had let them believe, and the number moves for reasons they're responsible for.
The man with the 3:05 didn't lose anything when he ran the numbers. He found out his best marathon was the one he'd been apologising for. He just had to give up the story where the clock was the whole truth.
