You've read that 80% is "national class" and nodded along. Fine. But it's an abstraction until you know the actual clock time it asks of you. So here it is, in seconds and minutes, for your sex and your age.
A 50-year-old man hits 80% with an 18:15 5K. A 50-year-old woman does it with a 20:13. A 65-year-old man needs 3:14:55 for the marathon. Every number below comes straight from the Alan Jones 2025 road tables — the same tables RaceRecords runs on every race you log.
What does 80% actually mean?
Age grading scores your finish time against the world best for your sex and distance, adjusted to your age. 100% is that open-class world best, run at the age the tables think you could run it. 80% is four-fifths of the way there. The road factors here come from the Alan Jones 2025 Age-Grade Tables, approved by USATF's Masters Long Distance Running Council in January 2025.
The word "national class" is shorthand. The honest version is: 80% is a performance a small number of people in any given field reach. When I age-graded 100,807 Berlin Marathon finishers, 80% was about 1 in 83. So these aren't soft targets. They're the top edge of a serious, self-selected crowd.
The useful thing about 80% is that it's the same performance at every age. An 80% 5K at 40 and an 80% marathon at 70 are, biologically, the same quality of race. Only the clock time differs. The tables below are that clock time.
What 80% looks like for men

At 35 the target sits close to a genuinely fast open time — a 2:30 marathon is no small ask. By 80, the same 80% asks for a 4:02, which the tables consider an identical quality of running. The clock got kinder. The standard didn't move.

The shape is the same, offset by the difference between the men's and women's open records. A W50 sub-1:30 half is an 80% run. So is a W65 marathon just under 3:40. Different clock, same rung on the ladder.
How do you read your row?
Take one cell and unpack it. A 50-year-old man at 80% over the marathon is 2:48:10. That's 3:59 min/km, held for 42.195 kilometres. The same man's 80% 5K is 18:15, which is 3:39 min/km. Faster per kilometre over the short one, because the distance is shorter. Both are 80%.
So the table isn't four separate goals. It's one goal in four costumes. If you run 80% at the 5K, an 80% marathon is what the same engine should produce with the right training — the equivalent-time prediction from a single result.
The reason the target slows so smoothly is the curve above. The age factor moves a little with every birthday, not in a jump when you cross into a new bracket. That's why a 51-year-old's 80% time sits between the 50 and 55 rows, not stapled to whichever band a race organiser assigned. Your real target is a single-year number.
What about 75% or 85%?
80% is one line. The tables run continuously, so 75% and 85% are the same calculation with a different number on top. As a rough guide, each five points is worth a bit under 7% on the clock. Drop from 80% to 75% and every time above gets roughly 6-7% slower. Climb to 85% and it gets that much faster — which, near the top, is a brutal amount of time.
If your last race landed at 76% and 80% is the goal, the gap is smaller than it feels. For that M50 marathon it's the difference between about 2:58 and 2:48. Ten minutes. A training block, not a different life.
Why does another calculator disagree?
These times are Alan Jones 2025. That edition adopted the current marathon world records, which are faster than the ones older calculators use. So a table you find elsewhere — or a race results page running a 2015 edition — will show slightly easier 80% times, especially for the marathon. It's not wrong. It's just a different world record in the denominator.
