A 40-year-old and a 44-year-old both want to run Boston in 2027. Same bracket, 40-44, same sex. Both need 3:05:00.
The 44-year-old's 3:05:00 age-grades to 68.9%. The 40-year-old's identical 3:05:00 age-grades to 66.6%. Same clock time, same finish-line photo, and the older runner just posted the better performance by the sport's own measuring stick.
I ran every Boston qualifying standard through the Alan Jones 2025 marathon tables to see how often that happens. It happens in every bracket from 35 up. In some of them it happens by five points.
Two runners, one bracket, two very different age grades
Age-graded percentage is your time measured against what's realistic for your age. Divide the age-standard time for your exact age and event by your actual time, times 100.
The marathon age standard isn't the open-class world best of 2:00:35. It's that time stretched by an age factor that eases every year past your physical peak. At 40, the Alan Jones 2025 tables put the marathon age standard at 2:03:15. At 44 it's 2:07:32 — four minutes and seventeen seconds slower, because the tables expect four more years to have cost that much.
Boston doesn't use either number. It uses one flat time for the whole bracket.

Identical clock time, identical finish line, and a 2.3-point gap in what the sport's own scoring system says about the two performances. That gap is the subject of this post.
BAA also publishes a non-binary standard, set to the same times as the women's column. The Alan Jones tables carry male and female factors only, so there is nothing to grade those standards against and this post doesn't try. That's a limit of the tables, not a judgement about the category.
One wrinkle worth naming up front. BAA sets your bracket by your age on race day, not the day you ran your qualifier, so a runner can post the time at 43 and enter as a 44-year-old. That shifts who lands where in a bracket. It doesn't change the arithmetic below, which grades each standard at the bracket edges BAA itself publishes.
How much does the standard swing inside one bracket?
It grows with age, then it doesn't. Take every men's bracket and divide the age-standard time at its youngest and oldest edge into that bracket's one flat BQ time. The spread climbs steadily through the masters brackets, then breaks hard at the very top.
At 35-39 the spread is under a point. By 75-79 it's 5.0 points — the 75-year-old's 4:35:00 age-grades to 63.9%, the 79-year-old's identical 4:35:00 to 68.9%. The 18-34 bracket is the outlier that runs the other way: the 18-year-old faces the harder implied bar, not the oldest member of the group.
Women's brackets show the same shape, and wider in every bracket from 50 up. The 75-79 spread runs to 6.7 points against the men's 5.0, because the underlying age-standard curve for women's marathon is steeper across those five years than the men's.

Which bracket has it hardest?
Among the masters brackets, 50-54 for men and 75-79 for women. Those aren't the same story, and both exclude the open 18-34 bracket, which runs backwards and tops both fields.
Compare every masters bracket at its youngest edge. That's the toughest position to be in, since it's the age BAA effectively asks the most of. The men's hardest standard is 50-54 at 67.3%, the easiest 70-74 at 63.3%.
A 4.0-point range, and it doesn't move in one direction. It dips through the sixties and climbs again in the seventies.
The women's version doesn't dip in the middle. It climbs almost the whole way: 61.5% at 45-49, rising to 67.7% by 75-79, a 6.2-point range with the hardest bracket at the oldest end rather than the middle.

So "the standard gets easier as you age" is true for men through their sixties and false again in their seventies. For women it was never quite true at all — the biggest masters ask sits in the oldest bracket with a defined upper edge.
What about the 80+ bracket?
It is the extreme case, and the one bracket this post cannot chart. BAA publishes a standard for 80 and over — 4:50:00 for men, 5:20:00 for women — and unlike every bracket below it, it has no upper edge.
So the spread has no ceiling either. A man of 80 running 4:50:00 age-grades to 66.9%, roughly in line with the brackets beneath him. At 85 the same 4:50:00 reads 76.9%. The women's version is starker still: 73.1% at 80, and 87.8% at 85.

That 87.8% is national class by RaceRecords' own tier convention, earned by meeting the same published standard as a runner five years younger who grades 14.7 points lower.
None of which is BAA being careless. A bracket has to stop somewhere, entrants that far up the age curve are rare, and there is no obvious age to close it at. But it does mean the flat-time effect this whole post is about reaches its maximum in exactly the bracket the table stops measuring.
Does meeting the standard mean you ran a good age-graded race?
Mostly, no. Across every bracket in both tables, most values sit in the low-to-mid 60s, and the men's field never crosses 71.2% — the 18-year-old's edge case. RaceRecords' own tier convention calls 70% local class and 80% national class. Nearly every BQ standard in this post sits under that first line.
But one case clears the 70% line by a wide margin. A 79-year-old woman hitting her bracket's flat 5:05:00 standard age-grades to 74.5%, the highest figure in any bracket with an upper edge. That's closer to the 80% "national class" times than any qualifying performance in the men's field. Among the bounded brackets only two figures clear 70% at all — hers, and the 18-year-old man's 71.2%. The open-ended 80+ bracket clears it twice over.
Qualifying for Boston and running a strong age-graded race are related tests. They are not the same test, and the gap between them isn't constant — it's exactly the swing charted above.
Why doesn't BAA just use age-graded percentage?
Because a flat time is a number every runner can check against their own watch, with no need to know which table edition anyone used. BAA is sorting applications against a fixed field-size cap, not handing out a performance grade.
The same logistics case applies to age-group awards generally. Brackets are a printing and administration convention, not a physiology model. Boston's version is no different in kind from a five-year age-group podium. It's just higher stakes, because the number also decides who gets to enter at all.
Is meeting the standard enough?
Not always. For the 2026 race, 33,267 applicants submitted a time that met their bracket's published standard. The BAA still couldn't accept 8,887 of them inside the 30,000-runner field cap. The actual cutoff needed to be roughly 4 minutes 34 seconds faster than the standard itself (Boston.com, 2026-04-16).
So the published number in every table above is the floor, not the bar that actually got anyone in. Still, the floor is the part BAA controls and publishes, which is why it's the part worth grading. Whatever age-graded swing exists in the published standard, the real cutoff each year runs a further, unpublished margin beyond it — one that moves depending on how many people apply.
What this means if you're chasing a BQ
The standard tells you what BAA needs from your bracket to keep the field at 30,000. It doesn't tell you whether the time you're chasing is a strong age-graded performance or a middling one. And if you're a 44-year-old rather than a 40-year-old in the same bracket, it hands you a couple of points of margin you didn't do anything to earn.
If you want the second answer, chase your own age-grade PR over time rather than reading it off the qualifying table. The table was never built to answer that question. It was built to fill a start line.
Either way, hitting the standard gets you a spot in the lottery pool, not a verdict on the race.
